This Focus App Privacy Policy supplements the main ConciergePad Privacy Policy at https://conciergepad.com/privacy/ and applies to the Focus iOS app (listed on the App Store as "Focus by ConciergePad") and its built-in Screen Time extensions. ConciergePad LLC ("ConciergePad", "we", "us" and/or "our") makes Focus so that a family can run a focus schedule they agreed on together on a student's iPhone. The main policy continues to govern your ConciergePad account and every other ConciergePad platform; this document adds the details that are specific to Focus and Apple's Screen Time technology. Where this document is more specific or more protective about Focus, it governs for Focus.
Focus helps your family stick to the focus schedule you've agreed on together. During a scheduled focus window, apps and websites that are not on your family's always-available list take a break on the student's iPhone. Everything else about the phone keeps working. Focus never targets Phone, Messages, or emergency features. Its shield is category-based and follows the device's Screen Time "Always Allowed" list, which keeps Phone available at all times and keeps Messages available as long as it remains in that list (it is there by default). Emergency calls always work.
Focus is built entirely on Apple's Screen Time frameworks, and it uses them in the following ways:
Our commitment about Screen Time data. Any data that Focus obtains through Apple's Screen Time frameworks is used only to provide the family controls you have set up: running your family's focus schedule. We never use it for advertising, advertising measurement, marketing, analytics, or profiling, never sell it or give it to a data broker, and never share it with anyone outside your family's ConciergePad account and the service providers that host our platform for us.
Focus never sends your family's always-available list anywhere. When your family chooses apps (and, if it wishes, websites) in Apple's picker, iOS hands Focus a set of opaque tokens rather than app names or web addresses. Focus stores those tokens on the device so it knows what to leave alone during focus time. Neither Focus nor ConciergePad can turn those tokens back into a list of app names or websites. Like the rest of Focus's on-device data, the list may be included in any iOS backup you choose to keep; Focus itself never transmits it.
Focus never reads or transmits app-usage, browsing, or Screen Time statistics. Focus does not use Apple's usage-reporting tools at all. It never learns which apps the student uses, for how long, or which websites they visit, and it never sends anything of that kind to us. The one place an app's identity reaches Focus is the shield screen itself: when a paused app is opened, iOS gives Focus's shield screen that app's name and app identifier (the identifier is used only to recognize when the paused app is Focus itself), and for a paused website its web address, so the screen can say, for example, "[App] is taking a break during your family's focus time." That information is displayed on screen only. Focus does not record it or send it anywhere.
What Focus stores on the device. In its own private container, Focus keeps: your family's schedule as received from your ConciergePad account; the place in your family's plan, if there is one (see Section 04); whether a parent has paused the schedule; the session token from your sign-in; the per-install device identifier described in Section 03; your family plan identifier (see Section 03), the role chosen at sign-in (parent or student), and the email address used to sign in; a few status flags (for example, whether focus time is on right now, which kind of Screen Time permission was granted, and whether an early-unlock request is on its way); and a short queue of event records waiting to be sent (see Section 03). Once an event record has been delivered, it is removed from the device. Focus keeps at most 200 undelivered records; if the platform cannot be reached for a long time, the oldest undelivered records are discarded without being sent.
That private container is shared only with Focus's own three Screen Time extensions: the schedule monitor, the shield screen, and the handler for the shield's buttons. No other app on the device can read it.
Focus communicates only with ConciergePad's own platform at https://api.conciergepadedu.com, the same service behind your ConciergePad account. It sends information at four moments: when you sign in, when the device is enrolled, when a focus event happens, and when it checks for your family's latest settings. Apple's own frameworks that Focus relies on (for example, obtaining a parent's Screen Time approval through Family Sharing) may communicate with Apple; that is governed by Apple's privacy policy, not by ConciergePad.
When you sign in. Focus sends the role you chose (parent or student), the email address or username you entered, and your password to ConciergePad's existing sign-in service. The password is used once to sign you in and is never stored by Focus. iOS may offer to save your password in your iCloud Keychain; that is an Apple feature under your control, and Focus cannot read it. The sign-in service returns a session token, which Focus keeps on the device. Focus then asks our platform for your account profile, sending the email address or username you entered together with the session token. The platform returns the profile it already holds for your account; Focus reads only the name of the ConciergePad plan the account belongs to, keeps that as the identifier of the ConciergePad account your family's plan lives under (your "family plan identifier"), and does not store anything else from the profile. If you typed an optional account code at sign-in, Focus uses it only when your account profile does not already name your family plan.
When the device is enrolled. Right after sign-in, Focus registers the device with your family's plan by sending: your family plan identifier; a device identifier; the role (parent or student); the email address or username you signed in with; the platform ("ios"); the device model (for example, "iPhone"); the iOS version; and the Focus app version. The device identifier is a random value that Focus generates the first time it runs. It is not Apple's advertising identifier, not a hardware serial number, and not shared with any other app, and a fresh one is generated if you delete and reinstall Focus.
While Focus runs: event records. So your family can see that the schedule is working, Focus sends a small event record when one of the following happens: a focus window started; a focus window ended; the student tapped the shield screen's unlock button ("Ask for an early unlock", or "Check for an unlock" when Focus itself is paused); Screen Time permission for Focus was turned off; or, only when your family's plan includes a place, Location Services or Focus's location permission was turned off. Each event record contains the event type, the time it happened, a random event identifier (so a retried send is not counted twice), your family plan identifier, the device identifier, and, for all events except the early-unlock request, a small note with details. That note says which part of Focus recorded the event (the schedule monitor, or Focus re-checking the schedule when it was opened, refreshed, or told by iOS that the device arrived at or left the place in your plan) and, for schedule events, which day's schedule triggered it; for the permission event, it says which kind of Screen Time permission had been in place; for the location event, it says whether Location Services is on and what location permission Focus has. No app names, no usage amounts, no browsing information, and no location coordinates are ever included in any event record.
Checking for the latest settings. When you open Focus, tap Sync Now, when iOS grants Focus a moment of background refresh, or when a student taps the shield's unlock button, Focus asks our platform for your family's latest settings. That request identifies the device with your family plan identifier, the device identifier, and your session token, and the response carries your family's schedule, whether a parent has paused it, and the place in your plan, if any. Information in this step flows to the device, not from it.
Focus's App Store privacy label declares the collection of an email address, a device identifier, and product interaction (the event records above), all used only for app functionality and none for tracking. Focus declares no tracking, and it does none.
Focus uses location only if your family's plan includes a place-based schedule. If it does not, Focus never asks for location permission and never uses location at all.
When your plan does include a place, Focus asks iOS for permission to be notified when the device arrives at or leaves that single area, even when Focus is not open. This is region monitoring: iOS itself watches the boundary of the area and simply tells Focus "arrived" or "left." Focus never asks iOS for the device's location, never tracks the device's movements, and never records where the device is. The center and size of the area come from your family's plan and are stored on the device so iOS knows what to watch.
Arriving at or leaving the area is never itself reported to ConciergePad and no coordinates are ever sent. It only prompts Focus to re-check the schedule on the device, and leaving the area never ends focus time early; the schedule always stays in charge. If that re-check finds that a focus window should have started or ended, Focus sends the ordinary started or ended event described in Section 03, which carries the time but no location and does not indicate that it was prompted by arriving at or leaving the area. The only location-related information Focus ever sends is the event described in Section 03 that Location Services or Focus's location permission was turned off while your plan included a place.
We use the information described above for three things:
Focus information is visible only to the parent or guardian who holds the family's ConciergePad account, and to ConciergePad staff who need it to provide support or keep the service running. We do not make Focus information available to anyone else.
Focus records are filed under your family's ConciergePad account. They are not shown in any school or organization administrator tool. If that ever changes, we will update this policy and tell you first, as described in Section 09.
Beyond that, only the following parts of Section 05 of the main policy apply to Focus information: our use of service providers that host and maintain our systems (who may access Focus information only to perform those services for us and are bound to protect it at least as strongly as this policy does), our obligations to respond to lawful requests, and transfer in a corporate transaction on the same terms. The parts of Sections 02 and 05 of the main policy that allow analytics tools, location collection, sharing aggregated information with advertisers or sponsors, or use for marketing do not apply to Focus information. We do not sell Focus information, we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers, and we do not use it for advertising, marketing, or analytics. The Focus app itself contains no analytics or advertising code. Where this section is more protective than the main policy, this section governs for Focus.
On our platform. Your device's enrollment and its event records are kept for as long as your family's ConciergePad account remains active and are deleted when you ask us to (see below) or when the account is closed, subject to the backup-copy provisions of Section 06 of the main policy. Event records are operational history for your family's account; we do not keep them longer than that account needs them. Retention, backups, and deletion are governed by Section 06 of the main policy (How We Store & Secure Information) and by this section. Focus records are controlled by the family's ConciergePad account, not by any school or organization.
On the device. Focus keeps no history beyond the short queue of event records waiting to be sent (see Section 02); each record is removed from the device as soon as it is delivered. To stop using Focus on a device, first wait until focus time is off or have a parent pause the schedule from the family's ConciergePad account, and then delete the app. On a Family Sharing child account, iOS allows only a parent or guardian to delete Focus. Deleting the app removes everything Focus stored on the device, including the always-available list, the schedule, the session token, and the device identifier. Focus clears its Screen Time restrictions whenever a focus window ends or a parent pauses the schedule; we recommend deleting the app only while focus time is off so that no restriction is left behind. Focus does not currently have an in-app sign-out or delete button.
Withdrawing permissions. A parent, or on an individual-permission device the device's user, can turn off Focus's Screen Time permission at any time in Settings > Screen Time > Apps with Screen Time Access, or in Settings > Focus > Screen Time Restrictions. Focus then stops pausing apps and reports to your family's account that its permission was turned off. Location permission can be changed in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Focus.
Asking us to delete records. Deleting the app does not remove records already sent to our platform. To ask us to delete your device's enrollment and event records, or to close the account, contact support@conciergepad.com. As described in the main policy, you can always opt out by deleting your account and ceasing to use our Services.
Focus runs on a student's device, and that student may be a child under 13. Focus is meant to be set up by a parent or guardian, or together with one. Consent for Focus to collect the information described in Section 03 comes from the parent or guardian who holds the family's ConciergePad account and who agreed to the focus schedule and, on devices that are part of Family Sharing, from the parent who approves the Screen Time permission when iOS asks. A child under 13 should not set up Focus alone. For a child under 13, a parent or guardian signs in to Focus (alone or together with the child) and we recommend a Family Sharing child account so that the parent also approves the Screen Time permission; if a family uses individual Screen Time permission instead, the parent or guardian should be the one to grant it. If we learn that Focus was set up on a child's device without a parent or guardian, we will delete the information collected.
Focus can be signed in with either a parent account or a student account. If the Student option is used, the email address Focus collects and sends (Section 03) is the student's own ConciergePad account email. A student should sign in only with a parent's or guardian's knowledge, and in that case we rely on the consent of the parent or guardian responsible for the student's account. For Focus, we rely on the parent or guardian, not on a school. The school-official and school-consent arrangements described in Section 03 (Student Data) of the main policy and on our Student Data Privacy page do not apply to Focus: Focus information is collected under this policy at the direction of the family, and the parent or guardian may exercise the rights in Section 06 directly with us.
For Focus, the statement in Section 08 of the main policy that we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13 does not apply; this section describes what Focus collects from a child's device and the parental consent we rely on. We collect only what Section 03 lists, and nothing more is required to use Focus. A parent or guardian can review the information Focus has sent about their child's device, ask us to correct or delete it, or tell us to stop collecting it, by contacting support@conciergepad.com; stopping collection means removing Focus from the device as described in Section 06. Our other Children's Privacy commitments in the main policy apply to Focus. In addition, Focus contains no advertising, no in-app purchases, no third-party SDKs, and no tracking. We never use the device identifier or any Focus information to build a profile of a child, to advertise to a child, or to follow a child across other apps or websites. We do not use Focus to market to students.
If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13 without proper consent, contact security@conciergepad.com so we can delete it as soon as possible.
Focus connects to our platform only over HTTPS, so everything it sends and receives is encrypted in transit. Each sign-in produces a session token that Focus presents with every request; if our platform stops accepting a token (for example because it has expired), Focus shows a "Please sign in again" message on its home screen while your family's last-known schedule keeps working in the meantime.
Focus asks for nothing it does not need. It does not use Face ID, Touch ID, or any biometric data; it does not access your contacts, photos, camera, or microphone; and it requests location permission only in the situation described in Section 04. Enforcement of the schedule is handled by Apple's Screen Time frameworks on the device, and your family's always-available list is stored as Apple-issued tokens that even we cannot read.
Information stored on our platform is protected as described in Section 06 of the main policy, including US-based hosting and defined user roles that limit who can see what.
We may update this Focus App Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make significant changes that affect your rights, we will take reasonable efforts to notify you via the email address on your ConciergePad account or a prominent notice when you use our Services. Your continued use of Focus after a change means you have read, understood, and agreed to the current version.
